PERSECUTED BUT ADVANTAGED

Biblical Reading: John 15:20-25
Text: "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." (Matt. 5:10).

COMMENTARY:
To suffer for being faithful and true to Jesus Christ should prompt us to "be thankful unto Him and bless His name". To be persecuted for righteousness' sake is to walk the road of saints, as the hymn declares, "Brother, we are treading where the saints have trod."

In Smyrna the mob dragged Polycarp, the aged bishop, before the judge. The judge demanded, "Bow before Caesar as your god or die". Polycarp had "a faith that will not shrink though pressed by many a foe." He has done me no wrong. How can I blaspheme my king who saved me?

Stephen, the martyr, made a lasting impression on his persecutors. "Gazing at him all who sat in the council saw that his face was like the face of an angel" (Acts 6:15, emphasis added). Would Stephen's prayers ever be forgotten? According to Acts 7:60, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them"

Christ fulfilled the will of the heavenly Father when He died on the cross to atone for our sins. For us, Jesus secured the kingdom of heaven. Persecution should be viewed as a privilege for any Christian. Check your life if you have not experienced persecution of any kind as a Christian; something is amiss. If you are being persecuted at the moment, take inspiration from Jesus, who is the ideal model for us. He will deliver and fortify you.

Prayer Points:

1. Dear Saviour, when I am persecuted and despised for your sak,, remind me of the Kingdom you have won for me.

2. May I never profane your name while I am persecuted.

3. In the name of Jesus, thank you, Lord, for your righteousness and for rescuing me from persecution. Amen.

Sleeping Capsule:
A child of God is strengthened for greater works by persecution.
