TRIUMPHING OVER DISCOURAGEMENT
BIBLE READING: 1 Samuel 1:1-8
TEXT: "Then Elkanah her husband said to her, "Hannah, why do you weep? Why do you not eat? And why is your heart grieved? Am I not better to you than ten sons?"" (1Samuel 1:8 NKJV)
COMMENTARY
Discouragement is one of Satan’s greatest weapons. It can weigh people down, drain their faith, and push them toward despair—just as the devils drove a herd of swine into the deep. (Mark 5:13).
Hannah had many reasons to feel discouraged. She was childless, constantly ridiculed by her husband’s other wife, and misunderstood even by the high priest (1 Samuel 1:7, 1:14). Though her husband loved her, his words of comfort could not solve her problem. However, instead of allowing discouragement to consume her, Hannah prayed. She poured out her heart to God, choosing faith over bitterness.
There are seasons in life when nothing seems to "come to birth"—whether in our work, relationships, or spiritual growth. In such moments, it can be hard to pray with faith. But Hannah discovered a powerful truth: to be fruitful, discouragement must be confronted and overcome.
Prayer opens the way for God to work (1 Samuel 1:19-20). Tonight, bring every source of discouragement under subjection in Jesus’ name. Let the Word of God in 2 Timothy 1:7 be your portion:
"For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind."
Rest in His promises, and sleep in peace.
