The Mystery of Suffering

Sub-Topic: A Look Behind the Scenes.

Bible Text: Job 1:6-12

Commentary:

Job 1:6–12 provides a look into the unseen world, portraying a discourse between God and Satan. God praises Job's righteousness, causing Satan to doubt his motivations. Satan implies that Job's devotion is conditional and motivated by God's benefits. God allows Satan to test Job, laying the groundwork for terrible suffering.

The Book of Job does not definitively address the issue of why decent people suffer. However, it initiates a discussion about the difficult realities of religion and suffering. Job's tale calls us to battle with these problems and eventually believe in God's character and sovereignty, even when we don't comprehend His methods.

Prayer: Lord, help me to maintain confidence in Your kindness throughout difficult times, even when I don't understand why.

Work Action: Consider a period when you encountered adversity. Consider how you dealt with the issue of "why." Write down one poem that gives you consolation in trying times.

Scripture reference: Romans 8:28. "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."
