Gearing Up for God

Biblical Text: Ephesians 6:10-18

Commentary

After discussing the nature of temptation and God's plan for deliverance, Ephesians 6:10-18 provides a practical strategy to avoiding sin. The chapter describes the "full armor of God," a collection of spiritual instruments designed to prepare us to fight against temptation.

Each piece of armor reflects a spiritual characteristic that helps us resist temptation. The belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit (the Word of God) all work together to keep us safe against the enemy's plans.

The image of armor reminds us that resisting temptation is an ongoing war. We do not defeat sin passively. Putting on God's armor allows us to actively participate in spiritual combat, taking power from God and His Word to withstand temptation and live a life agreeable to Him.

Prayer: Oh Lord, help me put on the whole armor of God every day. Strengthen my resolve to overcome temptation and live victoriously in You.

Work Action: Research the many elements of God's armor in Ephesians 6:10-18. Write out how you will integrate each item into your everyday life to avoid temptation.

Scriptural Reference: Romans 13:12 "The night is nearly over; the day is approaching; let us then put off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light."
